Think of a person whose life was shot as a film, autobiographies written and books set with her designs…The muse of the fashion world: Gabrielle Coco Chanel.

This week, I will be introducing my favorite Chanel book amongst the many that I have stocked in my library. The book points out, in plain text and with many pictures, the journey of Chanel transforming from a modest boutique at Rue Cambon , which opened in 1910, into a giant lifestyle brand of the industry…The set consists of 3 booklets, which demonstrates the evolvement of the brand under the segments of Perfume, Jewelry and Clothes. Each booklet will be a sight for your sore eyes whilst having a sip from your cup of coffee. Enjoy this unique compilation of stories and visuals of Chanel by Assouline Publishes.

PS: I must add that every design of Chanel is made from a piece of her character and life. That is why I do not think that you’d be able to fully understand the soul of the brand without knowing Coco Chanel’s life story. I strongly recommend that you read “Coco Chanel: The Legend and the Life”- Justine Picardie. You will find out how the iconic designs came to life in this book.

Not: Chanel`in her tasarımı onun kişiliğinden ve hayatından bir parça olduğunu belirtmeliyim.

It is hard for you to remember the names of the illustrators if you are not in to illustrations. However, you’ll definitely remember their illustrations from somewhere.

Whilst cruising through the pages, you’ll find sketches, which you’ve somehow seen before. It might be from the pages of The New York Times, the cover of the mix CD that you love to listen to or even on a billboard from a trip to Europe.Every drawing on each page is the reflection of the imaginary world of these highly talented artists on to paper. Taschen Publishing has gathered the most successful 150 illustrators in this book.

If you are into drawing or would like to create your own style, you must get a hand on this book. Who knows, you might find that inspiration, which you’ve been searching for, to create your own sketching style!

————–

Belki The New York Times’in sayfalarından, belki en beğendiniz mix müzik CD’sinin kabağından , belki de Avrupa’da yaptığınız seyahatte billboardlarda karşılaşmış olabilirsiniz. Her sayfadaki çizimler kendi stilini oluşturmuş, yetenekli sanatçıların hayal dünyalarından kağıda dökülmüş.

A beauty icon whom was adored by the entire world.

Her real name was Norma Jean and her stage name was Marilyn Monroe. She was fragile child who wasn’t able to shake off her orphanage years despite her fame and fortune.

Although she had many admirers, because of her beauty and success, she was always on guard due to her fear of humiliation in society. Was she a genuine dumb blonde or was she acting like one really well? Nobody knew the truth.

She always insisted, in her interviews, that she wanted to grow old without any plastic surgeries. Unfortunately, she parted long before she had the chance to age. Even after over 50 years from her death, she still continues to dazzle the new generations with her shining star.

You will witness, up close, the fragile and kind Norma within the sexy and reckless Marilyn in this book. You’ll find the images from her childhood, orphanage years, her initial marriage at the age of 16, and her path to the top via her flashy Hollywood movies through the lenses of famous photographers or her ex-husbands. The photos, which have been selected by Anne Verlhac, are completed with the foreword of David Thomson.

To cut a story short, in this book you will find a very attractive (in every way) and a different woman.

It was 1965 when Kenzo Takada arrived in Paris after travelling with his one-way ticket from Japan to Marseille. After only 5 years, he was able to appear on the cover of the Elle magazine with his Japanese influenced, comfortably fitted dresses. Kenzo brought a new approach to the monotonous western fashion world in the 1970s. He was the most desired designer in the 1970s and the 80s. The joining of Antonio Marras took the brand in to a new era in 1999.

In this book you’ll find out how a world famous fashion brand is formed and also get to see the beautiful designs, illustrations and photo shoots of Kenzo. You’ll witness every aspect of the brand up until the Antonio Marras era.

I have always been a huge fan of this brand. People who follow me know that, this legendary Japanese designer has influenced the name of my little fury friend.

PS: Humberto Leon and Carol Lim, whom had been very successful in the US with the Opening Ceremony brand, have been in charge of Kenzo since 2011. The duo managed to regain the popularity the brand once had and managed to put the brand back on the map. (Since the book was printed in 2010, unfortunately it does not include anything after 2010)

LOVE ; a powerful emotion, which we all want to feel, has been the inspiration to many artists on their work throughout centuries.

A painter would passionately paint the body of the woman he loves…

A pianist suffering from heartache would compose his best piece…

Mankind wouldn’t be able to obtain such beautiful outcome of artworks if it wasn’t for love.Whether it is poetry, literature, paint or music, none of them would be complete if love isn’t involved in them. The inspiration to many painters is their lovers, wives or their secret love affairs. The strong love that they feel increases the power of the stroke of their brush and thus, enabling creation of their masterpieces.

Art Historian Juliet Heslewood provides us with the love stories behind the works of great artists such as Raphael, Rodin and Gustav Klimt. In the book, you will find and enjoy the detailed stories of the great artists inspired by love (from the Renaissance era up until the recent past) and their love stories.

This week’s coffee table book recommendation is Heslewood’s “LOVER Portraits by 40 great artists” which is about love in the history of Art. A joyful book in the week of celebration of love!

not: Ne yazık ki, kitabın türkçe çevirisi henüz yok : (

Two magical cities…

I always plan my next visit to these cities before I leave to make the farewells much easier. As both cities are so extraordinary and so unique, it is impossible not to be dazzled by them. If your’re lucky enough to be living in one of these cities, you should count yourself very lucky as there are so many people who would die to be in your shoes.

Vahram Muratyan have demonstarted the differences and the similarities of the daily lives of these cities perfectly with his illustrations. Every page includes an illustration which gives you nothing but joy. You realize the value of small details which we disregard during our daily lives.

You should definitely have a copy of Paris versus New York. It’s one of my favorite coffee table book. Reading this book whilst having a sip from my copy exhilarates me. It will definitely put a smile on your face as well.

This book will enable you to witness these cities from a different perspective. Well, which city is your pick?

Espresso or Americano?

P.S. I purchased this book from historical bookstore ‘Shakespeare and Company’ on one of my visits to Paris. You should definitely check it out if you visit the Notre-Dame area.

————–

Paris versus New York mutlaka kütüphanenizde yerini almalı.

Espresso mu, Americano mu?

Not: Bu kitabı Paris’e yaptığım bir iş seyahatinde tarihi kitapçı ‘Shakespeare and Company’ den aldığımı ilave edip, eğer yolunuz Notre-Dame bölgesine düşerse uğramadan geçmeyin derim.
